Dr. George I. Martin: Director & English Tutor

Dr. George Martin tutors English in all its forms:  writing, reading, grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary and spelling.  He excels at preparing students for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT and helps students write excellent essays for college acceptance.  He also incorporates study skill development with his lessons.

He holds a Commonwealth of Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in English, Kindergarten and Elementary Grades 1-7, and in Speech Communication; a New York State Permanent Certificate in Grades N-6 and English 7-12; and both a New Jersey Supervisor’s Certificate and a provisional Principal’s Certificate.  

George grew up near a small town in the Adirondacks, where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. At Plattsburgh State University he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and his Master of Science in Education degree in secondary English.

After teaching at a junior high school in New York for five years, he moved to Virginia and taught English and public speaking at Fork Union Military Academy for fourteen years.  He also coached the debate team and the varsity soccer team.

Obtaining a full scholarship permitted George to attend the University of Virginia, where he obtained his Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum & Instruction with an English major and minor areas of evaluation as well as rhetoric & communication. He also received the Richard A. Meade Award for Outstanding Promise in Education.

Dr. Martin taught at twelve colleges and universities and served as chairperson of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at William Paterson University.  

His accomplishments include having been published in several professional journals, and having made presentations on pedagogy throughout the United States (and in The Netherlands).  He has also served as an English supervisor in a high school, acting principal at a charter school, and headmaster of a private academy.  Furthermore, he earned a third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Furthermore, Dr. Martin also has experience as a writer of standardized tests for ETS (Princeton), as a grader of SAT essays, and as a formulator of questions for the GED.
